Hello from everybody at Foal!
We're thrilled to finally be launching our first collection, Moteur! and introducing you to our garments.
April 1st - AKA April Foal's Day - is the official launch, but we'll be opening for early access on March 27th, the same day that you'll be able to read our brief interview in the Sunday magazine supplement of Auckland's Sunday Star-Times. We're also happy to report some lovely coverage from the likes of Natural Parent and The Ensemble Edit.
The Moteur! collection is firmly Autumn / Winter focussed, and as you'll see, mostly includes pieces inspired by vintage workwear classics, all for young people between 18-months and 8-years-old. The silhouettes are simple and the fit relaxed, a minimalist and gender-neutral approach that adapts to your child's nascent personality. We've used a lot of imported deadstock fabric (textile mill overruns) from a variety of secret sources, and worked entirely with local (New Zealand) screenprinters and embroiderers.
Our designs and our illustrations are all original works, and there are strictly limited numbers of each garment. Why? Because this collection was designed and hand-made by ourselves here in Auckland, using classical pattern-making and construction techniques. You will not find anything like it on any rack in a New Zealand store.
We truly hope you and you children will treasure these clothes.
Meanwhile, here's the opening of Zazie Dans le Métro. Foal first encountered it (in the form of Louis Malle's novel) years ago at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, and the film not long after. Tiny motifs from the film, and the era it sprang from, have wound their way into our designs, both in our prints but also in abstract shapes, colour schemes and clashes of patterns. Like Moteur! each future Foal collection will be themed around an artwork - and this diamond of 60's cinema is the ideal way to get us rolling. Enjoy.
